EXPERIENCED AND TRAINED

Expert Witness &
Forensic
Lip Reader

Lipreading for the media, legal, sport and health sectors since 2008.

Jeremy Freeman is an Expert Witness Forensic Lip Reader - certified by the Deafness Cognition and Language Research Centre at University College London (UCL) - and has been practising professionally for over a decade. There are just a handful of active expert witness lip readers in the UK.

The difference between a qualified forensic expert witness lip reader and am amateur lip reader is that we are trained to look at all the homophenes - when more than one sound shares the same viseme or mouth shape. A forensic expert lip reader can determine the intended meaning of a speaker by utilising all visual clues including lip movements, body language, facial expressions and context.

Jeremy was born profoundly deaf and learned to communicate using speech only (not sign language). He wears hearing aids, but these have some limitations, so he relies mainly on lip reading, and has done since he was a young child. These decades of practice have resulted in Jeremy becoming a skilled and experienced lip reader. His exemplary reputation has made him the go-to lip reader for the media, resulting in regular requests to lip read the words of participants in breaking news stories - politicians, celebrities and sportspeople, among others. His lip reading translations have appeared in newspapers including The Times, The Daily Mail and The Guardian.

He has also been hired by many legal firms and the police, who have used him to lip read from sources including CCTV evidence.

In addition, Jeremy has been privileged to work with tracheotomy patients in order to facilitate their communication with health service workers, and with their families.
